A Light Rain Falls…

We sail onward. Only a fool would waste an ounce of thought on this most gentle of precipitation. I’ll admit there was an uncomfortable feeling to it, but that could just be my dinner reminding me to eat better. This particular region has always had a strangeness to it. Think Bermuda Triangle, but less folklore and more reality.

I hear my shipmate call out, a sighting to the port side - no description. I join the others in their search. Another call, this time starboard. The ship bows in response to our group shifting. The search yields similar empty results and I’ve fallen angry now with our spotter. It’s too nice of a night for these games so I head off to confront him.

He’s not here. He should be here. My head suddenly turns as if under some invisible marionette’s will. I see her. My God! I’m frozen, my vision, my body, even my mind bends to her will. I yell out, “Dead Ahead! My God! Dead Ahead, Mates!” and the words ring true to the others. However, though the words came from my mouth it was her mind who said them. The crew joins my icy fate. I search hard for an original uncorrupted thought and find none but this, “I’m…afraid.”
